Where product information comes from, how fresh it is, and who checks it.
- USDA FoodData Central (public domain): about 465,000 US products with barcodes and ingredients.
- Open Food Facts and Open Beauty Facts: used as a fallback, with thanks and attribution. Their data is kept separate, under its own open license (ODbL).
- You: photos of labels you add. You see your own result at once, on your device only. A label becomes public only when at least 3 different people photographed the same ingredients list and our system, reading each photo itself, agrees; one person's photos alone can never produce a public Halal verdict.
- Our own record: products we only know from Open Food Facts are shown with its data, kept separate. Our own record of them comes only from label photos that 3 people agree on.
- Freshness: every result shows its data source and the date of its ingredients in the details panel.
- AI: our own AI, running on our own computer, reads label photos (never trusting what anyone typed), researches brands, and suggests what an unrecognized ingredient is. A suggestion becomes part of our dictionary only when our team approves it, and every approval is listed, dated, on What changed. AI never decides a verdict, a rule or a certifier's policy; the one AI-only thing you may see is the “Likely” note on an unrecognized ingredient, which never counts as a verdict.
- Privacy: no accounts are needed, no advertising trackers, and scan history stays on your device.
